Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder that can keep you from getting a full night’s rest every night. While a patient with obstructive sleep apnea is asleep, the muscles in their throat relax more than they should, causing the airway to collapse. The collapse of the airway delays oxygen, and the brain responds by waking up just enough to move the mouth back to a normal position. However, once the brain goes back to sleep, the muscles in the throat relax again, causing patients with obstructive sleep apnea to wake up repeatedly during the night as this cycle continues. Sleep apnea keeps patients from reaching the deepest sleep state and receiving the full night’s sleep that they need.

Along with the disrupted sleep, sleep apnea patients also often snore, and can interfere with the sleep patterns of their loved ones. If you wake up after a full night’s rest feeling tired and sluggish, this could be a sign that you are suffering from obstructive sleep apnea.
